How are applicants selected for NHS at Broughton?
BROUGHTON NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION PROCEDURE
1. In the fall semester, membership in the National Honor Society shall be open to members of the junior and senior classes who have earned a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.50 or better. Members of the NHS must also excel in the areas of leadership, character, and service.
2. At the beginning of the fall semester, a list of all juniors and seniors maintaining at least a 3.50 unweighted cumulative grade point average will be compiled. These students will be notified that they are eligible for consideration for membership in the National Honor Society by e-mail and by letter during the school day. They will also receive an application to apply at that time.
3. A Faculty Council will convene to review applications submitted by the candidates. The Faculty Council will be chosen by the administration and will be anonymous. The NHS Advisors are not members of the Faculty Council and do not review applications.
4. The Faculty Council* will review all materials submitted by the candidate along with other verifiable information. Before the Faculty Council reviews the submitted materials, the candidates’ names are removed from all papers that the selection committee sees and replaced with Student ID numbers. All applications are reviewed name-blind.
5. Candidates will receive notification of their application status via their student e-mail accounts.
*The administrator will select the Faculty Council annually. This council will be composed of representatives from different academic areas.
The administrator will strive to appoint council members who teach a range of student groups, who are full-time teachers, and who have been in the system at least three years. Membership of the Faculty Council is confidential. It is the charge of the Faculty Council to speak for the faculty as a unified body and not simply to reflect personal bias about candidates. Teacher input is provided to the Faculty Council to acquaint them with the students’ strengths and weaknesses.
